Background:

Reporting directly to the Program Coordinator, the Mentor’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: organizing classroom space and other areas, overseeing that the kitchen area chores are completed before any programming or free time for the relatives. The Mentor will develop a schedule for cultural crafts, fun activities, and a variety of group sessions to promote life skills and self-care. The Mentor is also expected to conduct regular rotational room checks and safety checks on program relative floors. This position will be trained by the Program Coordinator to gradually gain skills as an In-House Healing Counsellor. Once the new building is renovated the Mentors will be required to work overnights (evenings/weekends) on rotation.

 

Required Qualifications:

Degree/ Diploma/ Certificates in the addictions field

Grade 12 High School Diploma &/or Equivalent

A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.

Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with Northern Communities and their members

Two years of sobriety and a substance free lifestyle

Understanding of social factors that affect the health and well-being of relatives

Understanding of strength-based approach, trauma- informed care, community capacity-based models and solution focused

Clear criminal Record check with Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child & Adult Abuse Registry Check

Valid First Aid/CPR certification; Nonviolent Crisis Intervention; Suicide InterventionCertificate considered an asset

 

Essential Requirements:

Ability to build positive external partnerships to enhance program deliverables

Build and maintain a healing environment that is positive, relaxed, pleasant, nurturing and supports Indigenous traditions, culture and values.

Understanding of Indigenous customs, experience, traditions, and values

Ability to speak and understand a First Nation’s language is considered an asset

Ability to work with relatives in crisis that experience significant challenges, understanding of mental health challenges, addiction challenges

Initiative to plan, organize and to manage time effectively both independently and in a teamsetting

Strong verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills

Strong non-judgmental problem-solving ability, conflict resolution and decisionmakingskills
